Bryce caught his wife smiling and laughing. “Seven, are you finally gonna share what you’re so happy about?” he asked.
“I was just thinking back to a conversation that I had earlier with an old co-worker from back in the day,” Seven answered.
“It must’ve been a good one judging by the size of the grin on your face.”
Seven smiled again then used the butter knife to spread peanut butter on one of the slices of bread. “So, what’s going on with the money and the bills? Will the rent be paid or are we gonna be homeless?”
Bryce let out a long sigh. “Baby, don’t worry yourself with the rent money. I’m working on it. I still have some other possibilities that might pan out. I’ll make a way. You’ll never have to worry about being homeless.”
“So, should I ask my brother for some money?”
Bryce gave Seven a funny look. “No I don’t. Every time we get in a bind you always bring him up. I don’t always want him in our business. We’ve borrowed enough from him anyway.”
“Stop being so proud Bryce. If we need the money all I have to do is ask him for it.”
“I’m not being proud. I just don’t wanna ask the nigga for any more money. I told you I would take care of it.”
Since Seven’s drug dealer brother, Stephon was the only family she had normally Bryce didn’t say anything when she brought his name up. But borrowing money from him consistently really did make Bryce feel less than a man. He’d never met her crack-head mother, who Seven never spoke about, and her father was nonexistent.
“Why don’t you let me go back to the club and strip for a minute or two then? I’ll get us out of the red in no time.”
“Look, I already told you that no wife of mine is going to be showing off her naked body to a bunch of horny fucking men. Disrespectful men who think strippers are a bunch of hoes.”
“Is that what you thought when you were waving your hundred dollar bills and stuffing them into my g-string? It was okay that I was a stripper when you wanted me, but now it’s out of the question since you got me,” Seven said slamming the knife on the counter.
“Don’t try and put extra words in my mouth. All I’m saying is that part of your life is over so there’s no need for you to go back in the past. I’ll find a way and make this thing work for us,” Bryce replied.
A devilish smirk took over her face. “Well, since you don’t want me to go back and strip and you want to be the one to bring us out of this, I have another idea that would bring us some money.”
“Oh yeah, I can’t wait to hear what that idea might be,” Bryce said closing the lid on the Jif jar.
“How do you feel about escort services?”
Bryce immediately started laughing. “Escort Services? If I don’t want you to go back to the strip club, then why would I agree to you becoming an escort like that’s a better job.”
Seven’s loud burst of laughter made Bryce’s laughter seem childlike. “I was referring to you becoming an escort, not me.”
Bryce stood frozen. “What did you just say?”
“I said I was talking about you becoming an escort, not me. I know a lot of women who would pay big money for a date with a good looking man like yourself,” Seven informed.
“Now, I know you’ve been sniffing too many of those fucking chemicals at the salon to say some dumb shit like that. You’ve really lost your mind,” Bryce responded. “I hope that wasn’t what you were excited to share with me.” He was beginning to realize that Seven probably wasn’t pregnant.
“You know what…I must’ve lost my mind giving up my life to follow a man who can’t even pay the fucking bills,” Seven shot back. She wiped her hand across the counter sending all the food and dishes to the floor. “I don’t deserve this shit. Look at what we’re eating. I don’t wanna struggle. I deserve three course meals!”
Bryce couldn’t believe her outburst. “So, you’d rather throw our wedding vows out the window just because we hit a bad batch? You mean to tell me that you wouldn’t mind me being with other women. Trust me the first time we have a fight, you’ll use that shit against me faster than the Indy 500.”
“You’ve been with another woman before remember?”
Bryce paused for a moment. “What?”
“You heard me. Don’t get amnesia on me now. You don’t remember when all you talked about was seeing me with another woman on your birthday that year. I went out and found you one who didn’t have a problem with you watching. Then in the middle, I got bored with her and asked you to come over and join us. You didn’t have a problem with fucking another woman then, so why now.”
“I didn’t want to fuck her. I just wanted to watch two women go at it,” Bryce replied.
“It didn’t seem like you had a problem sticking your dick in her to me!”
“That was years ago when we were dating. I haven’t asked for anything like that since. Plus you want me to fuck a lot of women not just one.”
“Okay I get it now. When I asked you to join us that wasn’t bad. But since I want you to get paid for the sex now, that idea sounds crazy. So, you’ll fuck a woman for free, but a bitch paying you is out of the question. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense,” Seven said, then stormed out the kitchen.
“You can try and twist this shit all you want. I’ll fix cars in the damn street before I prostitute myself for a buck!” Bryce yelled back. “And you better not think I’m cleaning this shit up!”
Bryce could hear Seven’s footsteps stop then come back toward him. “Hey, I think Jiffy Lube is hiring if all you wanna do is be a fucking grease monkey. I hate niggas with no ambition.”
Bryce didn’t respond. Instead, he walked toward her. Seven assumed he was about to go off, but he kept going past her. Bryce returned moments later with a pair of running shorts and a white t-shirt. He went over and grabbed the car key off the glass table.
“Where the fuck do you think you’re going with my car?” Seven barked.
“Out.”
Bryce snatched the door open and slammed it behind him. Seconds later he could hear the door opening. Seven ran over to the rail and leaned over. “If you’re taking my car, that’s all the gas I have to get me back and forth to work. You better not use it up!”
Bryce didn’t even look back. After getting in the car, he quickly put Seven’s Hyundai Sonata in drive and sped off down the street.
