Sizzle, sizzle, sizzle is what I thought when I started reading this book. This is an excellent debut novel by the author. She did a good job at keeping me interested with the storyline. This book was well put together and kept my attention. I look forward to reading part two.

BPM: What are you the most thankful for now?
LRJ: I’m most thankful for my faith in God and the plan he has in store for me. My beliefs ground me and give me a sense of peace to let his will be done. I recognize my blessings and I’m so grateful and humbled for my ability to share the written word.
BPM: What made you want to become a writer? How long have you been writing?
LRJ: I’ve been in love with the written word since before I could remember. Growing up, I spent most Saturdays at the local library immersed in stories. That love of everything books followed me into adulthood and after college I co-founded a book club called Sistahs On The Reading Edge. We’ve been together for almost two decades and I found that after finishing the books, a little whisper would say, “I can do this.” I tried to suppress the urge for as long as I could, then in 2009 I took action and found my way to a writing coach. And Dangerous Consequences was born.
BPM: How did you initially break into the publishing industry? How do you feel about self-publishing?
LRJ: Being the President of Sistahs on the Reading Edge Book Club I’ve been a voyeur to the Publishing industry for more than 15 years. Once I decided to write, I researched my options and decided to independently publish my novel. There are so many choices today when it comes to independently publishing your work and I decided to not to use subsidiary printers, instead choosing to make an investment in me. I’m having a blast and learning something new on my author journey every day.
BPM: Success leaves clues, whose clues did you follow on your journey?
LRJ: Most of the successful African American authors were self-published at some point during their writing careers. My journey is a lot less bumpy because of the road they’ve paved for me and I’m forever grateful to them. I’m a visual hands on learner and they’ve each given me many clues to emulate and are willing to help those who help themselves. Once upon a time self-publishing was frowned upon, now it’s more accepted in the industry.
BPM: How has writing impacted your life?
LRJ: I write fiction, but I also journal daily and create visuals in my dream book. I write with no expectation and the practice is relaxing and sparks reflective inquiry, creativity and ideas. I’m better because I write.
BPM: Do you view writing as a kind of spiritual practice?
LRJ: Writing is very therapeutic and freeing. Sometimes, my thoughts I put on paper are incomplete, but I find that if I keep at it, my subconscious leads me where I need to go and helps me problem solve.
BPM: What was one of the most surprising things you learned from this project?
LRJ: Writing a good book is important, but creating and then executing a well-thought-out book marketing plan to promote your book once it is in print is the key to your success. If readers don’t know your book exists, they can’t buy or read it.
BPM: Do you have any advice for people seeking to publish a book?
LRJ: First, write the book. Then, focus on the publishing. There are so many different options out here and good research will help to determine what’s best for them. That might be traditional publishing and it could also be self publishing. But my most important advice would be for them to remember the golden rule that people are willing to help those who help themselves.

BPM: What inspired you to write this book? Why now? Ever experience writers block?
LRJ: This book was inspired by society. I read the newspaper, a few celebrity blogs and stay up to date on current events. Cheating is EVERYWHERE. I started writing this book several years ago and this topic is just as relevant today as it was three years ago.
Not only do athletes and celebrities cheat, but everyday people cheat too and we see this played out nightly on the show Cheaters, not to mention Maury Povich and Divorce Court. It was my curiosity surrounding how people who live their lives in the public eye deal with infidelity and relationship issues publicly. I mean it’s one thing to have your mate cheat on you, but then to have EVERYONE know about it and critique your handling of the situation has to be stressful and plays a big part in your decision-making as to whether you go or stay. There are other topics covered in the book such as: Mental Illness, Blackmail, Sexual Harassment. The book is available on Paperback, Nook, Kindle and Audio.
BPM: What was your hardest scene to write, the opening or the close?
LRJ: I say the opening scene since there is so much riding on those first few pages. My job as a writer is to do a great job of creating a sense of urgency that compels and motivates my reader to turn the next page. If they don’t turn the page, they will never experience my story.
BPM: Are any scenes from the book borrowed from your world or your experiences?
LRJ: The San Francisco Bay Area is the backdrop for my novel and since I live in the Bay Area I had a blast with the places and things in this book. I’m a visual writer and part of my writing process was to drive around and experience situations as my characters would. I went to restaurants, drove the routes they’d take to work and visited some of the other places they frequented. Sometimes, when I was experiencing writers block, I’d go drive around where the characters lived and played and things would start to flow. In terms of borrowing from my personal world and personal experiences I’d say I’m a runner and Sydney James my main character is also a runner.
BPM: In writing your novels, how do you develop the plot? How much research was required, if any?
LRJ: My novel is more character driven versus plot driven. I do use a limited outline to guide me to where I’m trying to go, but I learned through my process that it’s best to get out of the way and allow my characters to tell the story as they want it to be told. To make my story authentic, I did do some research.
BPM: Do you try to deliver to readers what they want or let the characters guide your writing?
LRJ: As an author, the one thing I’ve learned along the way is that the story belongs to the characters. My only job is to get out of the way and let them tell it.
BPM: Is there one subject you would never write about as an author? What is it?
LRJ: My creative mind is always in what if mode. I believe if there’s purpose in the writing/story and people can learn and grow from it, then the story should be told.
BPM: Is there a certain type of scene that's harder for you to write than others?
LRJ: The scenes that are most difficult for me to write are the ones that have characters with no redeeming qualities. By nature, I’m an optimist and I always seek the good in everyone, however, in fiction writing (and in real life), sometimes the good doesn’t exist. In the beginning I would stare at the computer for hours trying to find a redeeming quality in some of these people. But after a stern chastising from my husband, I realized that every character in my stories, even the crack head have a role to play. And not everyone can or wants to be saved. It was a very hard lesson.
BPM: What should readers DO after reading this book?
LRJ: Tell 10 friends about it, post a review on amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com or other appropriate sites.
BPM: Ultimately, what do you want readers to gain from your book?
LRJ: What I enjoy most when I’m reading a good book is my ability to immerse myself into the lives of the characters and to feel as if I know the people I’m reading about. I hope my novel is able to do that for my readers. I also want them to be entertained and to expand their horizons a little.
BPM: Share one specific point in your book that resonated with your present situation or journey.
LRJ: The book deals with a theme of infidelity from three different women’s perspectives. Although these are not my personal story, I have experienced infidelity in the past. It was freeing to allow each of theses characters to respond to the insult in their own unique way.
BPM: Is there a specific place/space/state that you find inspiration in?
LRJ: In my current book series, my characters live in the San Francisco Bay Area. For inspiration and to guide what happens next in my stories, I travel to the neighborhoods they live in. By frequenting coffee shops, restaurants, etc, it’s like seeing the environment through the eyes of my characters. It’s a really cool experience.
BPM: Does writing energize or exhaust you?
LRJ: Getting lost in the storytelling is energizing. Wanting to get the story right can be exhausting. Writing is rewriting and it includes many types of editing. By the time the process is done, I don’t want to look at the story on paper again.
BPM: What are the top three things that make you feel happy and fulfilled?
LRJ: Outside of my family, I feel most alive when I’m reading, traveling or being creative which for me consists of writing, cooking and making signature cocktails.
BPM: What makes you forget about the world around you?
LRJ: Being in nature calms me and gives me a renewed energy.
BPM: What strengths did you use to achieve two major goals in life?
LRJ: My desire for the FREEDOM to do, be, have and to create the life I want is the fuel that drives me toward achieving major goals in my life. Goal-setting is an important skill, but it’s useless without taking action. My strengths are big picture visioning and execution.
BPM: What other projects are you working on at the present?
LRJ: I’m in the final editing phase of Surviving the Chase the highly anticipated sequel to Dangerous Consequences. I currently speak and facilitate workshops around the country on Women’s Empowerment, Writing, and Racial Bias. And lastly, I help aspiring authors create strategy around writing, marketing and publishing their books.
