How to Get Unstuck from an Unhappy Career
This is the first of a series of short (5 minute) audios aimed at career change. More will follow. It is my goal to meet your needs. Feedback is welcome. Email me at the link on the bottom.
Also below is a short note form of the actions you can take, covered in the audio, to bring more clarity to the road you seek to travel next in your work experience.
Reflection Questions: [taking action without knowing what the bridge is made of will cause you grief. It is easier to start with self-reflection and then act from clarity. Still, as you move forward, be prepared to experiment.]
- What do I value about where I have been with this career? Or ask: what have I learned?
Take some paper and jot it down. This gives you the value you have gained from your experience. By the time you get to this point it is easy to forget what you have gained. Coming from a position of strenght in the career change is important.
2. What has kept me from moving/ what is keeping me in my current career?
Again write down your answers and notice what comes up:
a) where you have polarized thoughts like: freedom and security at opposite ends; or responsibility and doing what I have always wanted to do at opposite ends. These mark gaps that must be closed for you to move forward.
b) your yabbuts. "Yabbut what really want to do doesn't make enough money". Each of these show an attachment or need that invites reflection. how much is enough? what would have to change? those are the kinds of questions that serve as follow-up questions to your list.
3) Identify what you love to do and truly want to be engaged at. Separate it from what you can do and what you love to do. At this point, you can do a lot. It is more about doing what gives back. Self-sacrificing to work is not a game you can play anymore.
4) Get to know yourself better. See www.onesmartworld.com but apply what you learn. Notice how you think, how quick you can shift thinking gears. Awareness is both transformational and is a partner to understanding.
5) Notice the tone of your thinking and word. How is it serving you? inspiraing, supporting, negative. Be very clear about what fuel you want to feed yourself.
More to come. Hope that this helps and that you are having an excellent summer....dawna jones
