Intimate Conversation with Shenay T. Perkins
Shenay T. Perkins is an actress and writer from Brooklyn, New York who developed a love for writing and the theater at a very young age, having written her first short story at the age of seven. As an avid storyteller, Shenay often acted out her stories for her family and friends. Her innate passion for acting has given her the opportunity to perform in several stage productions throughout the country. This is her first children’s book.
BPM: Introduce us to your book, primary message (NF) and the main characters. What makes each one special? Do you have any favorites?
My book, I CAN BE ANYTHING I WANT TO BE: A JOURNEY TO THE WHITE HOUSE tells the story of a young boy named Joshua that aspires to be President of the United States, but becomes discouraged when he is teased by his classmates. His teacher Mrs. Stallings then steps in to tell the story of President Barack Obama as a source of encouragement and motivation.
BPM: Which character or topic (NF) in the book can you identify with the most? Why?
I can relate most to Mrs. Stallings as I have always been one to offer encouragement to those around me when they need it most.
BPM: What inspired you to write this book? Does your faith or education inspire your writing?
I would have to say that the greatest inspiration behind writing this book was my desire to inspire children to set goals and put in the necessary work in order to achieve those goals. There are many things that inspire my writing such as music, my imagination, and experience.
BPM: Who do you want to reach with your book and the message enclosed?
Of course I want this book to reach as many tiny hands as it possibly can but, I also believe that my book will offer encouragement to adults as well. Actually, I have had several adults reach out to me to let me know that they too were inspired by my words.
BPM: Ultimately, what do you want readers to gain from your book?
I want each reader to be able to gain the self-confidence that will be needed in order for them to strive to achieve their greatness.
BPM: What are your goals as a writer? Do you set out to educate? Entertain? Illuminate? Inspire?
As a writer, I set out to do all of the above! It is very important for me to educate and inspire in a manner which is fun and entertaining. I always want my words to be relatable.
BPM: Finish this sentence- “My writing offers the following legacy to future readers... ”
I believe that my writing will enforce the reality that it takes hard work and resilience to be able to achieve goals. People can spend a lifetime chasing a dream, but those of us that are willing to put in the work and showcase courage in spite of fear will actually be able to catch our dreams.
